Priority is given to GYN cancer survivors! Because of a grant from Athena s Run for GYN Cancers, the workshop is offered at no charge to survivors! Hooray - Chef Malena is making a special trip back to W-S just to help me co-teach this workshop! Check out Chef Malena s recipe demonstration that she recently did for a news spot in DC! http: www.wusa9.com entertainment television programs great-day-washington cooking-with-healthy-indian-spices 381962123 The goals of our program include: - increase knowledge about nourishing food choices for treatment and beyond - lower your intimidation around cooking - learn cooking techniques you can apply to other foods recipes - be introduced to new foods - Don t Worry, Be Happy, Have FUN!! The recipes we will learn are TBD but Chef Malena always chooses great ones! Here are some of the recipes she has done for previous workshops! Homemade Waffles 2-Ingredient Biscuits with Sweet Potato Butter and Blueberry Compote Roasted Sweet Potato Salad with Ginger Vinaigrette Sweet Potato Mac and Cheese Savory Sweet Potato Dip Sweet Potato Smoothie Homemade Hummus Sauteed Asparagus with Apples Moroccan Spiced Apples with Pita Grilled Apple and Kale Salad Caramel Dip A really great part of this program is that participants get to take home ingredients to make several of the recipes at home! Here s what a past participant had to say: I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the Cooking Workshop with Chef Malena. I have made three of the recipes and plan to make another one this weekend. So far, my favorite is the Winter Veggie Salad with Rosemary Balsamic vinaigrette. I have made it twice now and turned it into Salad in a Jar. I really hope you can have the class again so others can attend. Seeing and trying the recipes made all the difference in the world. V-Day Salem College 2017 presents student-led, benefit performances of The Vagina Monologues to raise awareness about violence against women. Originally written and performed by award-winning playwright Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues is based on interviews with women of different ages, nationalities, ethnicities, and circumstances. Proceeds from this performance will be donated to the Hawley House. Recommended for a mature audience. Tickets: $8 for all students, $10 general public. The Brown Paper Bag exhibit explores a segment of black history known as Colorism in the African American culture and how it has influenced our perception of ourselves in Social Value, Beauty, Status, Education, Economics and many other aspects of black life. This exhibition is not intended to be a flash point of conflict or controversy but to open a dialog and educate the community about its presence in the African American culture and our struggle and victory over its practices and misguided values. Concept: Colorism , a term coined by Alice Walker in 1982 which speaks about discrimination and social meaning based on skin color also known as Shadism in the African American as well as different cultures

The Photo League offers a chance for Sawtooth photography students and instructors to meet and stay connected beyond class through movie nights and photo walks. For much of the 20th century, eugenics was a widely-accepted practice in the U.S., endorsed by the Supreme Court in the 1927 Buck v. Bell decision. Thirty states sterilized citizens with the aim of reducing poverty and getting rid of the unfit. North Carolina ran one of the most aggressive eugenics programs, sterilizing more than 7,600 men, women and children between 1933 and 1974. The State of Eugenics follows the journey of survivors, legislators, and journalists working together to obtain compensation for the survivors of these injustices. Following the screening, Professor Melissa Harris-Perry will moderate a panel comprising the film s director producer Dawn Sinclair Shapiro, former chair of the Governor s Task Force on Compensation Dr. Laura Gerald, Winston-Salem Journal editorial-page editor John Railey, journalist Tommy Tomlinson, and former N.C. Representative Larry Womble.
