This is the first film to be made about the incomparable Maya Angelou. The film presents her incredible journey, shedding light on the untold aspects of her life with remarkable unmatched access. This intimate and personal portrait of Dr. Maya Angelou s life is a touching and moving tribute to her legacy. Distinctly referred to as a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture, Maya Angelou gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. Dr. Angelou s was a prolific life as a singer, dancer, activist, poet, and writer she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. This unprecedented film weaves her words with rare and intimate archival photographs and videos, which paint hidden moments of her exuberant life during some of America s most defining moments. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana to her inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, the film takes us on an incredible journey through the life of a true American icon.

New Winston Museum s first quarter 2017 Salon Series, Nature Through New Eyes begins January 26 with Living in a Post-Wild World: New Approaches to Nature, the Environment, and Growth. This series consists of three programs offering a look at our local relationship with ecology and how we interact with green space. In this panel discussion, Kristen Haaf, landscape architect with environmental design and planning firm Roots First, will introduce the concept of the Post-Wild World. Lindsey Schwab of Innovation Quarter and Keith Huff with the Stormwater Division of the City of Winston-Salem will share their perspectives on the subject. Cornelia Barr, Board Chair of Gateway Nature Preserve (GNP), will join the conversation to present GNP as an example of urban conservation that embraces the post-wild world paradigm. A draft version of the Gateway Nature Preserve master plan will be available for the public to view. Join us for this discussion focusing on the public s shifting attitudes toward conservation, as well as a look at the parallels between restoring decaying industrial areas as centers of innovation and restoring blighted landscapes.
