2. Millikin University Choir Concert

The Millikin University Choir will present a concert at 7:00pm on Friday, January 20 in the Sanctuary, as part of its annual winter tour. The Choir has an extensive touring history that includes performances in Scandinavia, Russia, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, China, Taiwan, the Baltic States and throughout the United Kingdom. Additionally the Choir has seven CDs to its credit. Recent appearances at National Conferences of the American Choral Director s Association have garnered new attention to the Choir s approach to tone. The Millikin University Choir is under the direction of Dr. Bradley Holmes, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies. He has led the choir since 1991. The concert will also include a guest appearance of the Glenn High School Choir. The concert is free and open to the public, with a love offering taken up for the choir. 4. WS Jaycees' Chili Cook-off For Lake Waccamaw

The Chili Cook-off for Lake Waccamaw Boys and Girls home will be held on Sunday, January 29th, 2017 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The cost to enter the chili competition will be $8.00 per entry, which includes tasting. There will be four categories: Vegetarian, Spicy, Unique, and Best Overall! Guests will gather to taste and judge a chili cook-off. For tasting attendees, the entry fee is $10.00, which includes tastings of all chili competition entries. Chili competitors are asked to cook in advance and bring cooked chili to event site. Chili will be kept heated at event site. Competitors will also be asked to bring a copy of their recipe with them to the competition. We will award certificates to the three winners and a larger gift to the best overall chili who will be the grand champion. 100% of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to the North Carolina Jaycees Girls Cottage at Lake Waccamaw. This cottage houses teenage girls who have been removed from their families for many reasons including poverty, death of their parents, or domestic violence. These young women may reside at the cottage for a short while during the time their family receives support or they may reside at the cottage until they turn 18 and enter the workforce or college. All of the chapters of Jaycees in North Carolina contribute financially to assist this girls cottage all year long. Donations may be in the form of donated items such as sports equipment, school supplies, or other recreational equipment like computer software or music CDs. In addition, the North Carolina Jaycees donate over $30,000 to help the house pay for essentials including utilities, bedding, and kitchen supplies. http: www.wsjaycees.org https: www.wsjaycees.org chililakewaccamaw

Join us Thursday, January 19th from 5:00-7:00 PM for the FREE Artist Reception for AMALGAMATED TRANSMUTATIONS: SANCTUARY AND SAFEKEEPING in the Davis Gallery. Artists Nicole Uzzell, Millicent Greason, and Woodie Anderson present new work examining spaces where comfort, safety, and authenticity can be found. The third in their collaborative series, this exhibit will include three large-scale installation pieces built on-site, inviting visitors to contemplate their own feelings of safety and belonging. Visitors may also explore the artistic process through an interactive installation that includes a peek into the artists studios, touchable work-in-progress, and discussion on the use of creative-space as a sanctuary for nurturing artistic thought and creation. The artists will be present for this event. Please join us to meet the artists, ask questions, and enjoy a glass of wine. The goals of this program include helping pet owners with the transition and responsibility of bringing a new pet into their home. The STP program also wishes to help owners deal with behavior issues that may lead them to consider giving up their beloved pet. Puppy troubles? Older dog problems? Dog won t listen? Proceeds from this performance will be donated to the Hawley House. Recommended for a mature audience. Tickets: $8 for all students, $10 general public.
