Wednesday, January 11th, 2017
@Professional Women of Winston-Salem
Winston-Salem, NC
Join us for our January PWWS Meeting with Elizabeth Lucas-Averett! Ah, January. The season of best intentions, life-changing resolutions, and the desire to reboot, reset and make this year, THE YEAR. But what is the secret to making lasting change? Why do we sometimes struggle with forming habits that actually make us happy? We know they make us happier, but we still struggle executing them consistently. Why do so many of us know what to do, but we just can t make it stick? We know what to do but we just aren t doing it. (Or, we start and then flame out.) How Do We Actually Change? Elizabeth Lucas-Averett is a businesswoman, an entrepreneur, an imperfect, but dedicated mom to her teenage son, an almost-great wife and a lifelong student of maximizing her potential and helping you reach yours. She is Co-Founder and Managing Partner of the management consulting firm The Trivista Group, LLC since 2003, Co-Owner of Village Juice Co. in Winston-Salem, and Creator and Host of the On Air with Ella Podcast. In January, Elizabeth will share with us real-life strategies that work for Mastering The Habits Of Our Everyday Lives. We ll talk about real action, not theory!, and how to truly make 2017 our best ever. You will NOT want to miss this!

2. Vesna Pavlović "lost Art" -community Slide Show
Thursday, January 19th, 2017
@Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA)
Winston-Salem, NC
Vesna Pavlovi presents the Community Slide Show event at SECCA in conjunction with her Lost Art exhibit at the Hanes Art Gallery. This one-night performance features an open call to members of the community to bring, project, and share their personal collections of photographic slides in a gallery setting. Each projection offers a view to a personal history, with narratives as distinct as the individuals behind the pictures. Audience members are able to share their personal histories, as well as sort through and project slides available within the installation. For older audiences, these references to medium-specific sensory perceptions evoke nostalgia, and recollections associated with earlier modes of experiencing images. For younger audiences, they provide an introduction to the antiquated slide show experience. In this way, Lost Art explores the history and cultural significance of the slide format. 6. Yadkin Riverkeeper Annual Meeting
Thursday, January 19th, 2017
@Yadkin Riverkeeper
Winston-Salem, NC
Yadkin Riverkeeper will host its Annual Meeting, Swimming Upstream: The State of North Carolina s Waters, on Thursday, January 19, at the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA), 750 Marguerite Dr, Winston-Salem, NC. The event is free and open to the public. Beginning at 5:30PM with a reception, the meeting starts at 6:30 and features a panel discussion with North Carolina Riverkeepers, legislative and legal experts from around the state who will offer their perspectives on the health of North Carolina s waters. The event corresponds with the debut of a new report that details the work of Riverkeepers across North Carolina. This state has a proud history of environmental protection, said Will Scott, Yadkin Riverkeeper. However, 2016 has been a year of vast devastation and increased pollution, from storms, the burgeoning hog and chicken industry, coal ash and other chemicals and abuses. Contributing to the problem are environmental officials who turn an eye to the problems and are slow to respond to issues. Combine this with State government that has attempted to roll back protections and you have a State where Riverkeepers had to work harder than ever to protect our waters. This meeting is the public s chance to hear what Riverkeepers are doing on their behalf. Donna Lisenby, Waterkeeper Alliance s Clean and Safe Energy Campaign Manager, will give the keynote address, titled Dirty Energy: Why Coal is Bad for Water. She also will moderate the panel of experts, including: - Mary MacLean Asbill, Senior Attorney with the Southern Environmental Law Center, will give an update on legislative issues throughout the state. - Pete Harrison, Waterkeeper Alliance s Staff Attorney, will address Hurricane Matthew s devastation. - Sam Perkins, Catawba Riverkeeper, will provide information on fire devastation in Western NC. - Will Scott, Yadkin Riverkeeper, will offer details on North Carolina s Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) and the formation of a new Watershed Taskforce The meeting will conclude with presentation of the annual Riverkeeper Award. During the reception from 5:30-6:30PM, guests are invited to view SECCA s newest exhibit, Dispatches, that showcases artistic responses to the news by 34 contemporary artists and photojournalists. Works date from 2010 to the present and explore the critical issues of our time, organized in five thematic zones: - Ecological Justice - Post-9 11 Realities - Borders and Migrations - New Forms of Social Action - US Presidential Election Attendees are
