Guest artist D. J. Sparr will be performing an evening of his electric guitar compositions. Sparr will perform solo on his first set and in the second set will be joined by Winston-Salem Symphony Assistant Concertmaster Rebecca Willie on violin. This is a special opportunity to get a taste of the electricity of Sparr s guitar compositions as well as others, including Steve Reich s Electric Counterpoint in an intimate and relaxed setting! This is the last Baby Talk class that will be offered. This workshop is open to teachers that work with infants-2-year-olds only. You must be 18 years old or older. You must currently work in a center with infants and toddlers. This workshop will cover teaching practices that promote the language and communication development of infants and toddlers. 3 months after the workshop, we will send you a 20-minutes online survey. After completion of the survey, you will receive a $25 Amazon gift certificate. Snacks will be provided.

For much of the 20th century, eugenics was a widely-accepted practice in the U.S., endorsed by the Supreme Court in the 1927 Buck v. Bell decision. Thirty states sterilized citizens with the aim of reducing poverty and getting rid of the unfit. North Carolina ran one of the most aggressive eugenics programs, sterilizing more than 7,600 men, women and children between 1933 and 1974. The State of Eugenics follows the journey of survivors, legislators, and journalists working together to obtain compensation for the survivors of these injustices. Following the screening, Professor Melissa Harris-Perry will moderate a panel comprising the film s director producer Dawn Sinclair Shapiro, former chair of the Governor s Task Force on Compensation Dr. Laura Gerald, Winston-Salem Journal editorial-page editor John Railey, journalist Tommy Tomlinson, and former N.C. Representative Larry Womble.

New Winston Museum s first quarter 2017 Salon Series, Nature Through New Eyes begins January 26 with Living in a Post-Wild World: New Approaches to Nature, the Environment, and Growth. This series consists of three programs offering a look at our local relationship with ecology and how we interact with green space. In this panel discussion, Kristen Haaf, landscape architect with environmental design and planning firm Roots First, will introduce the concept of the Post-Wild World. Lindsey Schwab of Innovation Quarter and Keith Huff with the Stormwater Division of the City of Winston-Salem will share their perspectives on the subject. Cornelia Barr, Board Chair of Gateway Nature Preserve (GNP), will join the conversation to present GNP as an example of urban conservation that embraces the post-wild world paradigm. A draft version of the Gateway Nature Preserve master plan will be available for the public to view. Join us for this discussion focusing on the public s shifting attitudes toward conservation, as well as a look at the parallels between restoring decaying industrial areas as centers of innovation and restoring blighted landscapes.
